How To Determine The Real Value Of Vintage Jewelry By Looking For Hidden Marks

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Owning vintage jewelry is not just a collection of accessories, but in many cases can be a prized investment as well. While many pieces are very rare and considered to be collector’s items, it’s still important to know what makes a piece rare and what gives it it’s value.

You will find pieces that are made of low grade materials, but because of their age and rareness can sometimes be worth small fortunes, and are therefore a solid investment. While you are seeking a particular piece, make sure you know what you’re looking for and you’ll be able to quickly and easily know the real stuff from the fake stuff.

There are certain name brands in the vintage jewelry market that you will find. Some are easier to find than others, while some have more value than others. Some common names are Boucher, Marboux, Ann-Vien, and Bartek, although the latter two were not as common. In fact, although the names are known, they didn’t promote many pieces when they were first around in the 1950′s, and there were distinctive differences in their style.

The Boucher brand is often popular among collectors, started in the 1930′s under the Marboux name, and in the 1970′s it became Cartier. The Boucher brand is highly limited and rare to find because each piece is numbered, which makes it a favorite of collectors.

Early in the 1900′s brands like Lisner and Monet were very popular. The Monet collection was made of lower grade materials at the time, but because of age and rareness now have a much higher value attached to them.

When Christian Dior hit the scene early in the 1940′s, popularity soared because the name already carried with it recognition. Now, because of it’s age and it’s recognized name, Dior is highly sought after with collectors, thus increasing it’s value.

Prior to 1975, Duettes were a common and favorite mark for dress clips with all brands. They were made by Coro. Higher end pieces used the brand Corocraft.

Trifari, from Italy, is very popular and also very expensive because it’s made of extremely high quality materials. Value tends to be very high because of this and, thus, are great investment pieces.

When you are selling or buying, these are just some of the marks to look for. They can be hidden, so look carefully. You could pay too much or sell for too little if you’re not careful.

Before you sell or buy vintage jewelry or antique jewelry know the truth, so you’ll know precisely how much it’s worth.
